The growing demand for B2B and B2C solutions, coupled with the convergence of IT and Telecommunications, is creating an enormous variety of opportunities and challenges for Technical Architects with proven experience in the design and delivery of e-business solutions.

Role Responsibilities

Dependent upon technology skills, project management skills and background, there are various roles, responsibilities and levels of E-Business Architect which may include:

  • Full responsibility for the design and delivery of complex, E-Business solutions.
  • Developing an excellent understanding of the business needs and IT solutions
  • Definition of the functional architecture of the e-business solution, its interfaces, relationship to the business requirements and its use of data
  • Definition of the functional architecture of the e-business solution infrastructure, its interfaces and its uses of computing resources
  • Exploitation of new media
  • Specification of the design and implementation standards to be followed by the delivery team
  • Support the project manager in the estimation of delivery tasks and with the technical supervision of the delivery team and solution.
  • Provide thought leadership and guidance on issues relating to the design and delivery of E-Business solutions
  • Specific E-Business Roles:

    The role of E-Business Strategist/Consultant is typically a client-facing one that involves:

  • envisioning the impact and implications of new and emerging business models and technologies and articulating these at board level;
  • providing advice and guidance on the strategic implications of introducing e-business solutions to the client’s IT environment (such IT security issues; IT management implications of developing and maintaining e-business applications;  the integration of e-business and current applications; hardware and software infrastructure considerations; assessment of technical risks;
  • supporting the client in the development of a business case for the introduction of e-business solutions).
  • The E-Business Project Manager is responsible for the:

  • management of e-business implementation projects throughout the entire project lifecycle.
  • driving the successful achievement of project milestones,
  • the deployment of quality, risk and change management procedures and managing client expectations.
  • The role E-Business Solutions or Applications Architect will typically involve:

  • the definition and design of technical solutions to meet the needs of the business requirements such as e-procurement, eCRM or electronic storefront solutions
  • The role of E-Business Technical Architect/DBA will typically involve

  • the design and implementation of the complex IP architectures underlying e-Business solutions
  • their integration with existing infrastructures, based on an excellent appreciation of emerging Internet-based technologies.
  • The role of E-Business Software Architects will typically involve:

  • the configuration and implementation of packages such as Ariba, SAP BBP and Infobank
  • The role of Web Application Developer will involve:

  • the architecting and development of Web (Internet, Intranet and Extranet) & e-Business solutions;
  • this will include the analysis, design, coding, testing, implementation and documentation of programs.

    NB: Roles with consultancies will typically involve building long term relationships with clients and gaining an in-depth understanding of their business and technology needs. This will also involve supporting account managers, bid managers and sales teams to win business.

    Experience Indicators

  • Proven 7 years’ plus experience in the design and delivery of IT solutions, ideally including expertise in one or more technology areas.
  • Proven E-Business experience including excellent technical design experience of both B2B and B2C solutions together with an excellent appreciation of the many different dimensions that are involved in E-Business; the ability to think through an e-business solution at the architect level
  • Proven experience in architecture, IT and IS Strategy including architecture design, complex solution design, component based development, technology route maps etc.
  • Knowledge of the complex IP architectures that underly e-business solutions and an understanding of their integration with existing infrastructures
  • Proven Internet, Intranet and Extranet experience including a strong knowledge of Web-based development and knowledge of Internet related technologies including: Internet/Intranet architecture and strategy, Internet Security; HTML, Active Server Pages, application servers; IIS, IIOP, Commerce Server, Web Objects;
  • Knowledge of XML (including use within EDI & role of XML repositories) and of other B2B enablers: in particular XML, BizTalk or RosettaNet
  • Practical experience and knowledge of application and process for packages such as Ariba, BroadVision
  • Presentation Services - personalisation and customisation
  • Knowledge of middleware architecture, including messaging (e.g. MSMQ) & transaction processing (e.g. MTS) and experience of developing and deploying distributed systems
  • Component based development experience ideally including the building of CORBA, DCOM or EJB components
  • Understanding of flexibility and scalability considerations
  • Understanding of run-time considerations including integration, security, performance, availability, functionality, usability etc.
  • Understanding of business considerations such as cost, time to market, system lifetime, implementation schedule, legacy use, etc.
  • Experience of taking a key role in the shaping and delivery of successful IT projects including end-to-end solutioning of the technical e-business deliverables and experience of leading large scale and/or RAD application design activity
  • The E-Business Strategist/Consultants should possess a successful track record of senior management influence, acquired via multiple roles and projects, that combines both business and IT skills in the shaping and delivery of successful IT projects
  • Application Developers should demonstrate strong Java and Web tools experience ideally including Perl, Javascript and C++.
  • Supplementary Skills:

  • Knowledge of legacy integration, ERP Systems and/or EDI solutions is advantageous
  • Experience in one or more technologies such as SOAP, J2EE, VisualCafe,
  • Experience of Security services (including Kerberos, PKI, Proxy Server & Active Directory)
  • Experience of network protocols and/or services (including ATM, Frame Relay, T1/E1, FDDI, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Netware, netbeui, Netware, TCP/IP)
  • Experience of network infrastructures ( including LAN, WAN, routers, switches, hubs, premise wiring etc.)
  • Experience of operations management (including Systems management server, SNMP )
  • Experience of operating systems services (including Windows 2000 Professional, Advanced Server & Windows NT)
