ERP & Supply Chain

The E-Business explosion and the adoption of customer-centric solutions will have a major impact upon the continued expansion of the enterprise applications market. According to AMR Research, the ERP market will grow from $16.9 billion in 1999 to a value of $21.4 billion in 2004 and the SCM market will grow from $3.8 billion in 1999 to $20.3 billion in 2004.

As we approach a supply chain-based economy, ERP and SCM systems provide a foundation upon which B2B and CRM application functionality can be added. And with the introduction of ERP application servers, the focus of  large enterprises is now on integrating their ERP and SCM systems with their suppliers and customers. The integration of the value chain in this way will allow networks of customers and suppliers to reduce costs and improve effectiveness. It is therefore expected that established enterprise application vendors (such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle & Concur) and supply chain vendors (i2 Technologies, Manugistics and Extensity) will increasingly make their presence felt in the B2B market

This growth and the changes which will accompany it will generate a tremendous variety of opportunities for all kinds of IT Architects and Project Managers with all players in the evolving E-Business marketplace including the enablers (ie the technology platform vendors, security vendors, carriers, hosting providers), service providers (ie application vendors, content providers) and most of all with systems integrators  whose expertise in the integration of systems will be vital.

ERP

ERP is an acronym for Enterprise Resource Planning. Unlike SCM, ERP systems look backwards and each transaction, which forms part of the record of what the business has done, is preserved for legal and financial reasons.

ERP systems are also built around the transaction, which can be assigned to a specific function in the organisation. SCP systems on the other hand look forward with every transaction changing the framework on which the future is based. SCP systems also model the business as a whole  making departmental boundaries irrelevant as the focus of SCP is on the relationship and synchronisation between the different parts of the supply chain.

The different database technologies employed by these systems - ERP’s relational, transaction based databases  and SCP’s  memory-resident, dynamic databases - illustrate these contrasts.  (see SCP).
