The emergence of the knowledge based economy, accompanied by the impact of the Internet,
has seen an increasing range of technologies - including groupware, document management, search agents, knowledge maps, Intranets and more recently corporate information portals - being promoted as key components of the
knowledge management solution.
The recognition that a company’s intellectual capital is a key corporate asset, together with the growing capabilities of
enabling technologies such as the Intranet, is resulting in many companies reversing their move to decentralisation back toward centralisation and is fueling the development of corporate information portals (also known as
enterprise portals). In the same way that Internet portals have enhanced consumers use of the Web, these corporate portals have the potential to dramatically increase the value of corporate information by providing improved
access to valuable information. Naturally there is a significant overlap here with other technologies such as BI/Data Warehousing, content management and personalisation solutions, CRM, supply chain & collaboration
applications, e-marketplace applications, not forgetting knowledge management and groupware applications.
Providers of document management and workflow solutions, many of which were established prior to the emergence of the Internet,
have responded by embracing Internet technologies and by making radical changes to their product strategy. Industry analysts agree that workflow and e-commerce are intrinsically linked. Likewise the complimentary nature of
document management technologies to the Intranet/internet has given document management a much welcomed boost and has extended its use both within and beyond the enterprise It has also been one of the catalysts driving the
convergence of different technologies, including workflow, document management and groupware, that is increasingly supporting the entire life cycle of documents. The integration of workflow and the Internet, e-Workflow, is
enabling the development of adaptive, agile, responsive enterprises capable of reacting to the rapidly changing demands of global competition and as such promises to be a key factor in determining the future shape of
business organisations.
The growth and importance of corporate data (which is doubling every 6-8 months) and intranets (which are now deployed in more
than 90% of major companies) is making it essential for companies to leverage all forms of digital content via effective content management. Consequently the content management market is set for massive growth and, according to
the Meta Group, is expected to exceed $10 billion by 2004.
Although knowledge, document and workflow technologies have - boosted by the Internet and enhanced by the emergence of newer
solutions such as content management and collaboration technologies - made a significant contribution, many enterprises still only have islands of automation and only a few have a fully integrated system. Companies will
also need to ensure that technology is incorporated into an optimal business process rather than as an overlay to existing processes. These represent just some of the challenges that will undoubtedly present a variety of
exciting opportunities for innovative, business-driven technologists who possess a clear vision of the business requirements and capabilities of the increasingly converging technologies and solutions.

ECM
|
ECM is an acronym for the newly emerging technology known as enterprise content management.
ECM consists of technologies which are aimed at dynamically creating and bundling together information chunks to form coherent packages such as documents, manuals, publications or Web pages. With the
growing demands for just-in-time information, these dynamic documents and publications are making many of their traditional predecessors obsolete. The essence of a content management system is the
treatment of information as granular, manageable components that can be accessed, updated and combined in real time.
ECM systems allow the presentation of the information to be kept separate from the content. They
should allow the control and management of content from its creation to publishing, the management of document components, the separation of style from content, and a powerful publishing engine. The
ECM is emerging as the foundation of an enterprise’s information infrastructure. An example of an ECM is Interleaf’s BladeRunner. (see BladeRunner)
